Members of the Bayside Cycling Club embarked on a 10-day, 1,000 km ride from Melbourne to Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road to raise awareness and funds for the Kathryn Browne-Yung Scholarship Fund. This tireless journey not only highlighted the charity’s mission but also brought the story of Kathryn and Michael Yung to a wider audience.

Beginning on 10 March 2022, cyclists set off along the scenic coastal route, enduring long days in the saddle to honour Kathryn’s legacy. Along the way, they shared information about the Fund and its goal of empowering first-year Indigenous medical students. Their commitment resonated deeply, drawing attention from local communities and cycling enthusiasts alike.

The ride concluded on 19 March 2022—the anniversary of Kathryn’s passing—at Flinders University beside “Kathryn’s Garden,” established by her friend and Fund Director, Dr Tamara Mackean. This poignant finish celebrated Kathryn’s dedication to social justice and health equity, underscoring how her vision continues to inspire collective action.

The event attracted media coverage, including a feature on the Channel 10 Breakfast Show, which helped share the charity’s purpose with a national audience. By showcasing the cyclists’ determination, the Fund’s story reached people far beyond South Australia.
Thanks to the generosity and perseverance of every rider and supporter, the Bayside Cycling Club raised over $20 000 for the Scholarship Fund. These funds will directly support Indigenous medical students’ living expenses, academic resources, and travel home for Sorry Business—removing critical barriers in their first year of study.
This remarkable fundraising ride exemplifies how community spirit and personal sacrifice can drive lasting change. As we reflect on their achievement, the funds raised will fuel scholarships and mentoring initiatives—ensuring Kathryn’s legacy lives on through the success of emerging Indigenous healthcare leaders.
